ABOUT THE NATIONAL CAPITAL IMMIGRATION COALITION
Background | Mission Statement | Purpose | Contact Information In 2002, as part of the Reward Work Campaign whose goal was to highlight the need for a reform in our immigration laws and support legislation in Congress that would help in this agenda, a group of organizations and local unions in the Washington D.C. area, came together to plan a rally and lobby on October 9, 2002. On January 14, 2003, the NCIC held a strategic planning session meeting to discuss, with the organizations and local unions represented, the vision and mission of the NCIC and to discuss a framework upon which the vision and mission of the coalition could be implemented. The mission of the coalition states the following: "The NCIC is a group of organizations that advocate, educate, and mobilize the immigrant community in the DC metro area toward citizenship and civic participation. NCIC will work for economic and social justice, to prevent the erosion of civil liberties and civil rights for all immigrants and enhance their quality of life." As laid out in the mission above, the coalition's concerns stem from the need of the immigrant community in the Washington Metro area to obtain legal permanent status in the United States. To this end, the members of the NCIC agree to proceed diligently and in good faith to establish and convene a Steering Committee which will explore the feasibility of and coordinate the activities required to achieve the parties' objectives set out above. In order for the NCIC to be successful in its mission, members of the NCIC agree to participate, to the best of their ability in a monthly meeting to determine and discuss the activities, which are important to achieve the goal of attaining legalization and citizenship for all immigrants in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The active participation of the members of NCIC in events relating to the stated goal is crucial in the success of the education, outreach, mobilization and the organizing of the immigrant members in the community.
